February Tidbits Part 2

Some of the other things that happened this Februrary:
Ryan lost his first tooth! He sortof wanted to pull it out himself, but he was mostly pretty nervous about it.  Josh helped him put a piece of floss around his tooth so he could tug on the floss and help pop it out himself, but he wasn't ready to do it himself.  His tooth on the other hand was super ready to come out.  In the end, I was the one who helped it out and while there were some tears (mostly from fear), a few seconds later he was pretty proud about it.

Ice Age Day at the Science Musum:
How appropriate for February!  We sat in on a presentation on dry ice.  We learned how cold it is and how it sublimates (transitions from a solid to a gas) by making cherry soda using dry ice.  Ryan was picked to be the helper.  He poured in the sugar, water and flavoring.  Then the presenter added dry ice.  All the atendees were able to sample a small, deliciously cold, cup of cherry soda.

Station 2 During Ice Age Day:
There were a bunch of cool exhibits on Ice Age Day.  One of them being a sticky tar like substance I suspect was made from a lot of Elmer's glue (considering it smelled strongly of Elmer's), and a bunch of ice age toy figures.  The kids were allowed to touch the "tar" and manipulate the animals in the tar.  Dylan just loved this.

 The Natural History Museum:
We took a field trip with friends to the natural history museum one day.  They had an exhibit up about design and construction.  There were paper and pencils out for the kids to design their own structures and lego's so they could then build those structures.  This is what Ryan built.  He said it is a park with a bench.  The "cross" on the bench is supposed to be a person sitting on the bench. The structure with the clear blocks is supposed to be water from the water fountain.
 Timber:
We had this tree in our yard that was leaning dangerously over the road.  The trunk was beginning to crack and it was clear it had to go before it fell on the power lines or our neighbors car.   We spent a good deal of time watching our tree guys shimmy up this pine tree, cut off the branches and then fell the rest of the trunk.

 Art Co-Op:
We learned about theater arts this month in our co-op.   One of our art projects was to make a diorama based off of a scene or concept from a favorite book, nursery rhyme, bible story or poem.  Ryan picked "Herman the Helper," a book he had checked out from the library and read  by himself.  This scene depicts Herman the Octopus going home after a long day of helping others.

Sick Days:  I became sick on a day Josh had to go into the office.  But I was in good hands, because my two boys took super good care of me.  They tucked me in and read me stories and Ryan even made sandwiches for lunch.

Swimming: Dylan has reached *that* point in his swim lessons where he was able to jump off the diving board in the deep end for the first time.  Good job kiddo!
