A Nature Hike

It is vacation time! And it would not be summer without enjoyment of the great outdoors!  So Grandma Noll took both us and Ryan's little cousin to the nature center on Saturday for a toddler program and hike.

Sasha, our guide was fantastic with the children!  First, she brought out animal pellets and let them feel the different animal textures--a fox, a turtle, a skunk, a deer and a groundhog.  Then, she showed them the cooresponding molds of these animal's tracks and told them a little bit about each animal.

Then we set out for a hike to see if we could find any of the tracks she showed them on the forest floor.

The children sure did pay attention and it was not long before their sharp little eyes spotted several tracks--some racoon tracks but mostly deer tracks.

One of our stops along our hike was at a small pond which housed several frogs and large tadpoles.  Ryan's sharp eyes even found a baby snapping turtle!
At the end of our hike, we had a little picnic, where I was surprised and delighted by Ryan's ingenuity.  He had been wanting apple juice for several days but we did not have any.  On our picnic he asked for an apple.  He then took his chocolate milk box straw and dug it into the apple and began sucking.  It worked for a few seconds until the apple pulp clogged the straw.  Quick little minds!
